City will host its 4th annual Walk for Water in celebration of World Water Day on March 25, 2012

Area residents are invited to participate in free, family-friendly World Water Day events on March 25, 2012, including the 4th annual Walk for Water.

World Water Day, celebrated annually, focuses attention on freshwater and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year's events highlight local and global water and food security in an effort to foster a better understanding of the complexities we are challenged with in providing clean, safe water locally and globally.

At 11 a.m. March 25, City staff will lead a 2.3 mile walk from Fairhaven Village Green to Depot Market Square along the South Bay Trail. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to carry jugs of water as they walk. Fun water facts and information will be posted on signs along the route.

From Noon to 2 p.m. organizations working locally on water and food-related issues will offer displays and information at the Depot Market Square. Music, food carts and entertaining water and food activities will engage participants. The first 100 participants receive a free stainless-steel water bottle or recycled grocery shopping tote.

The food and water security theme encourages participants to find out how both water quality and water quantity impact the local food we eat. Although enough clean, safe drinking water comes from the tap to meet our daily needs, many people do not know the quantity of water it takes to grow our food. One burger alone takes 634 gallons of water to produce.

The Water Cycle

The Water Cycle
Every time humans disrupt the natural water cycle there is a consequence. When large quantities of water are diverted or taken out of the natural system this affects the local surface water supply, which, in the long run, affects the ecosystem, plants and animals, as well as the local communities. This animation highlights how the Water Cycle works and how we sometimes disrupt it.

Water Re-use in a Recycling Society

Water Re-Use in a Recycling Society
Traditionally, the wastewater from many cities which draw their water supply from nearby rivers is disposed of further downstream in the same river. This new animation explores the possibilities and possible environmental benefits of the same wastewaters re-use in Agriculture.

Check out the official UN World Water Day site for more information and resources.  We hope to see you at the event!
